| Summary: | Books for children, as media of communication, are a way of transmitting a message, of representing and picturing the city; a representation that is, ultimately, the conception or the perception of the author and the illustrator. This study analyses the evolution of the representations of the city in Ivorian children’s literature. It is based on a lexico-thematic and semiological analysis of 35 Ivorian literary books for children published between 1985 and 2020. It appears that the city is taken in a sense of urban centre, symbol of development and social success. There is often a link between the city and the village, between life in the village and life in the city, both idealized by the authors and illustrators. Finally, the representations of the city are mostly based on domestic spaces, on representations of the urban way of life. The outside space is implicitly suggested. |
