The immunomodulatory effects of L-carnitine on the immune responses induced by LPS and transplantation in the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata martensii

description L-carnitine (LC) is a natural antioxidant that plays an important role in improving the antioxidant capacity of organisms and regulating the immune response. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of LC on immune regulation in Pinctada fucata martensii. LC was injected into P. f. martensii prior to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation or transplantation surgery. Serum immune-related enzyme activities, hemocyte apoptosis, and nucleus retention and survival rate of the transplanted pearl oysters were analyzed. LC pretreatment prior to LPS injection can lower the serum content of TNF-α and IL-17, enhance the activities of SOD and CAT, block PI3K-Akt and TNF signaling pathways, and limit hemocyte apoptosis. LC injection prior to transplantation surgery also reduced the content of TNF-α and IL-17, enhanced the antioxidant activity of serum, inhibited the NF-kappa B signal pathway, and increased the nucleus retention rate; however, LC injection had no effect on the survival rate of the transplanted oysters. These findings indicate that LC could inhibit the immune response induced by LPS and transplantation surgery and have implications for the development of immunosuppressive agents.
