Description
Summary:The art exhibition PIONEERING: Chinese Artists Abroad in France and Chinese Modern Art (1911–1949) held by the CAFA Art Museum in 2019 has been recognised as the largest-scale research exhibition on the ‘early twentieth-century study-abroad phenomenon’ in art history to date. As a research-oriented exhibition with rich content and in-depth themes, it emphasises integrating art history, criticism, and related studies in the curatorial process to provide a more comprehensive understanding for its audience. However, research on research-oriented exhibitions is notably lacking. Therefore, this article aims to analyse the layout, texts, and artworks of the 360-degree panoramic exhibition at this exposition. The findings indicate that the research-oriented exhibition successfully presents how these Chinese artists absorbed Western culture and achieved significant artistic innovation in transforming and integrating modern Chinese art. Their works display the integration of Chinese and French cultures and mark an important development phase in Chinese art history. Applying a research-oriented curatorial approach allows the public, artists, and art history scholars to know more about early twentieth-century Chinese artists in France through research-oriented exhibitions, making a significant contribution to the exploration and advancement of contemporary art research.
