description As the human population grows, animal consumption increases, and with it, animal production and feed, generating pressure on the environment, water resources, and biodiversity, contributing to climate change. Likewise, the amount of organic waste generated increases, which is considered a threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, new strategies are required for the production of animal and human food and the mitigation of environmental impacts. One of these strategies is the production of insects for animal and human food, which generate high nutritional potential, improving the sustainability of production systems and contributing to environmental improvement. Addressing the need for increased demand for animal protein due to population growth, Hermetia illucens is one of the insects considered beneficial and efficient, since they feed on decomposing organic matter in their larval stage, making them unlikely to be associated with disease transmission. Waste management by Hermetia illucens is considered a possible solution to the environmental problem and to the supply of animal feed without affecting native crops.
