description The austerity imposed following the Memorandum of Understanding has triggered a dissatisfaction that extended to broad sectors of the Portuguese society. Besides trade union action, which was going through a particularly critical period between 2010 and 2013, other collective actors emerged from civil society and mobilised against labour precariousness and austerity expansion, configuring a protest cycle. That context was breeding ground for the emergency of new action strategies, putting in evidence the existence of ambivalent relations, marked by complementarities and tensions, between the trade union field and social movements. This article focuses on the building of cooperation/articulation relations between the CGTP (the biggest Portuguese trade union confederation) and the anti-austerity movement, seeking to identify enabling factors as well obstacles to their unfoldment.
