| Summary: | With the emergence of diverse creative writing programs, from short workshops to full academic degrees, understanding their practices, community dynamics, and effectiveness becomes crucial. This article explores these aspects through a case study of South Gate Creative Writing School in Denmark, which offers a 4-year bachelor's degree in creative writing. South Gate has operated for 11 years and is unique in the Danish educational landscape. The study investigates how community and literary practices intersect in this setting, drawing on qualitative data gathered in August 2024 from 15 semi-structured interviews with current and former students. Key findings highlight the school's impact on students' craft development, third-party observations, personal growth, and critical thinking skills. The findings also include valuable perspectives on sentiments regarding, among others, authenticity, confidence, trust, and self-reflection. These insights underscore the role of community in fostering a socially inclusive environment that enhances both professional competencies and personal growth among students at South Gate Creative Writing School. |
