| description | The Paraguayan nation was built on the myth of a hybrid nation composed of the best of the Guarani culture and the best of the Hispanic culture. This hybridization found its expression at the linguistic level in the Guarani / Castilian bilingualism, a myth which started at the time of the colonial Paraguay and has continued during contemporary democratic Paraguay. The use of the Guarani language has certainly allowed the construction of the specific national identity based on a bilingualism and a bi-culture shared by all the citizens.Nevertheless new obstacles have emerged which question the opportunity to develop a minority language while Spanish is expanding in North and South Americas and while the command of English seems to be an asset for emerging countries. Just when the myth of a hybrid Hispanic-Guarani nation was going to become reality with the enforcement of bilingual education , a new myth is coming up, the myth of the Guarani Nation. |
