Summary:The first sudies dealing with "popular culture" in Mexico show a scarce thematic variety, concentrating on three basic fields: handcrafts, folklore and the study of indigenes. Nevertheless, as a result, of economic industrial growth in the forties, hitherto unknow phenomena have appeared alongwith new research difficulties. The author reviews works from that era in the field of urban anthropology in relation to the trajectory of cultural analysis.
