| Summary: | Coups are an anti-democratic form of intervention carried out by a group to advance its interests. Coups and mutinies during the Ottoman and Republican eras have left negative legacies. With the founding of the Republic of Turkey, it was thought that the era of coups was over but it resumed with the coup of May 27, 1960. The last of these attacks took place on July 15, 2016. It has been observed that those who carried out the coup of 2016 must have studied the coup of 1960 closely. Both coups took place outside the chain of command of the armed forces and exhibited distinct similarities and differences. The internalorganization and propaganda techniques leading up to the 2016 coup marked the similarity while the civilian initiative of coup of 1960 constituted the main difference between the two. This study is aimed at comparing and contrasting the two military coup attempts. |
