description The mastery of the body contributes to the struggle against the self and to the spiritual achievement. In the studied works, addressed to a growing population often organized as informal communities or regular orders, asceticism is replaced by a savoir-vivre which sanctifies the deeds of everyday life. The paper studies the rules affecting the satisfaction of elementary needs (food, sleep, cloth), and marriage or celibacy. The sources stress the necessity of an harmony between inner life and external behaviour, although spiritual achievement finally frees the man from voluntary effort.
