| Summary: | Various heritage bodies are concerned today with the analysis of technical networks (energy distribution, transport networks, information networks) and the way these networks impact on the territories they touch. In the context of this type of reflection, the Mission for the Inventory of the Cultural Heritage at the French Ministry of Culture, in association with one of France’s leading associations of railway historians and heritage enthusiasts (Association pour l’histoire des chemins de fer en France) organised a short conference on 22 October 2008 devoted to this topic of ‘Inventory work on railway heritage ; experiences and methods’. The proceedings of this conference are to be published shortly, and the whole day’s exchanges can be listened to on the web site of the AHICF. In preparation for this conference, it appeared interesting to take a look at the way France’s inventory services have studied and recorded the built railway heritage since the beginning of the Inventory’s surveys in the 1970s. This study, directed by Paul Smith and Marie-Noëlle Polino (AHICF), was carried out by Guillaume Simon, at the time a student at the University of Artois at Arras (Master professionnel 1ère année - Mise en valeur du patrimoine). The analysis is based on the notices available on line on the Ministry’s built heritage data base, Mérimée. |
