| description | Sheep production in Mexico represents an economically important livestock activity, which is developed under different production systems, depending on the region of the country where the production unit is located. Sheep farming, like other livestock activities, has limitations associated with infectious diseases, such as parasitic diseases caused by gastrointestinal nematodes, which have a negative impact by generating high mortality rates and reducing productive and reproductive parameters. The basic control strategy is based on the use of anthelmintic drugs derived from benzimidazole, macrocyclic lactones and imidazothiazoles, currently, the effective use of this type of drugs is threatened and restricted by the increase in populations of resistant gastrointestinal nematodes (Haemonchus spp., Cooperia spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Teladorsagia spp., Chabertia spp., Ostertagia spp. and Nematodirus spp. The purpose of this review was to analyze the current situation of resistance to anthelmintics in gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep in different regions of Mexico, in order to show their resistance, distribution and prevalence. |
