Description
Summary:The author of the article shows the opportunities that the periodical press had during the First World War. At the same time, the attention is focused not on the formation of its judgments about the most significant and topical problems, events and facts, but on issues related to the peculiarities of the relationship between the press and the military censorship. Obviously, following the authorities, the employees of the censorship department clearly recognized the role of newspapers and magazines as one of the important factors of influence on public consciousness, and saw in them the conductors of necessary sentiments. Military censorship acted as a tool with the help of which an attempt was made through periodicals to construct or at least correct the nature of existing attitudes and assessments. The article uses specific examples to show the mechanism that allowed Russian censorship in the conditions of war to go beyond its main purpose of preserving military secrecy by correcting the existing social relations. If its first function did not cause objections in society and was supported by the press, both the Russian press and the State Duma opposed the inevitable costs caused by attempts to shape public sentiment.
