description The article focuses on senior educational advisors (SEAs) and how they help advance secondary students’ scholastic socialisation efforts. Analysis of the division of educational labour between SEAs and teachers that is specific to this level of education demonstrates that SEAs’ work is characterised by practices that are subordinate to teaching. Although their professional activities are defined to some extent along heteronomous lines, SEAs still seek to realise margins of autonomy within their operations in order to be able to perform what they consider their “real job”. It remains that their socialisation aspirations run up against the difficulties of convincing teachers of merits of their professional perspectives, within institutions that have been structured by teaching spaces and times.
