description This perspective summarizes several important advances in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology in the past few years and places these advances in the context of future directions in stem cell research. The potential utility of stem cells for gene therapy, tissue engineering, and the treatment of neurological and other forms of disease is simply too significant to ignore, and yet our knowledge and ability to deliver these forms of therapy in a safe and efficacious manner will require additional advances in the understanding of the basic biology of stem cells.
