description The increasing demand for aquaculture products and the inability of traditional aquaculture technology to meet market demand have led to the birth of high yield low-carbon recirculating water aquaculture technology. However, as a closed/semi-closed system for high-density aquaculture, it has high requirements on water quality. The residual and accumulated heavy metal pollutants in treated circulating water may cause potential safety hazards to the aquaculture system, which not only accumulate in aquatic products causing biotoxicity or intoxication death, but also be transmitted through the food chain, posing a threat to human health. How to remove heavy metal contaminants accumulated in recirculating water while maintain efficient aquatic product yield is a key point for future technology development. Therefore, this article analyzed and organized the sustainability hazards and treatment technologies of heavy metal pollutants accumulated in circulating water aquaculture systems, and figured out breakthrough directions for future research, which expected to assist the development of heavy metal elimination technology in water bodies.
