Summary:Prior to his Gongorine swerve, the Count of Villamediana had synthesized a retrograde Petrarchan-courtly style, counter to the artifice of the new poetry and situated within what Luis Rosales identified as the courtly school. Following in the footsteps of the Count of Salinas and certain Portuguese quinhentistas poets, Villamediana refined a poetics that claimed to be anti-artistic and anti-erudite, employing a nuanced rhetoric of sincerity to showcase, in the exclusive palace milieu, his image as an enduring courtier and a genuine aristocrat.
