| description | Based on the fieldwork carried out in the Provincial Immigrant’s Festival (Berisso, Argentina, 2010-2015), the article analyzes the role that official memories have in the formation of collective identities. In this commemorative ritual, the representatives of local ethnic associations, the municipality and the Christian Church recreate the imaginary of the local/national community, dramatizing an origin myth: the myth of crisol de razas (white and European). The mnemonic use of this origin myth –which links the formation of the community to the arrival of European immigrants in the period between the 19th and 20th centuries and their harmonious fusion– allows these actors to give an account of the collective identity of Argentines and people from Berisso to the public sphere. In this context, the article describes the role that the past has in the formation of social boundaries, in the establishment of mythical figures of local memory and in the construction of legitimacy, prestige and recognition. |
