description The synthesis of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monoradicals, terbenzoolympicenyl radical (<b>BOR1</b>) and tetrabenzoolympicenyl radical (<b>BOR2</b>), is reported. One-electron oxidation of both <b>BOR1</b> and <b>BOR2</b> yielded stable cationic species <b>BOR1+</b> and <b>BOR2+</b>, whose structures were unambiguously characterized using 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The physical properties of <b>BOR1</b> and <b>BOR2</b> were investigated by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), UV-vis-NIR, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. <b>BOR1+</b> and <b>BOR2+</b> exhibited intense near-infrared (NIR) absorption, which may be of potential use in the biological fields.
