Selectively functionalized 2-vinylindoles represent highly interesting building blocks for regio- und stereocontrolled anellation and further functionalization of the indole skeleton. Hence they are useful building blocks for deriving natural and pharmacological active compounds. In the present review the most important synthetic methods for deriving 2-vinylindoles and some equivalents are discussed. The efficient synthetic value of these indole synthons is expound on some selected reactions.
