Description
Summary:Fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics has become popular by the virtue of its properties like broad spectrum bactericidal activity, better intraocular concentration, minimal side effects and resistance. Over the years serial modifications in the parent molecule have given rise to a range of fluoroquinolone molecules with augmented antibacterial coverage and less resistance. They act by inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis. Topical fluoroquinolones are being used in various ocular bacterial infections and in antibacterial prophylaxis. These provide a convenient and an effective option to the traditional fortified antibiotic combinations in the treatment of bacterial keratitis. Fluoroquinolone resistance has been encountered especially among Staphylococci, Pseudomonas and Serratia. The newer 8-methoxyfluoroquinolones due to their structural properties are less likely to develop resistance and have emerged as a new promising antibacterial therapy.
