Description
Summary:Throughout this paper, we present some characteristics of public high schools in Pernambuco during the First Republic, between 1889 and 1930. At this time, this level of secondary education was called for to be between the level of primary education and so-called third degree, higher education. Its key feature was to be selective and introductory, raising only the higher education and vocational training only the most "competent" and able. In Pernambuco, in particular, secondary education was still a strong class, because it served, according to the documentary and bibliographic research undertaken to strengthen, reproduce and perpetuate the model of aristocratic society dominated by a political and economic oligarchy from industry sugarcane, which subjected the other sectors of society, making use of public secondary school instrument of domination.
