Description
Summary:This essay aims to analyse a central work in Vincenzo Consolo’s production, the ‘theatrical fable’ Lunaria (1985), through its points of similarity and dissimilarity with L’esequie della luna (1967) by Lucio Piccolo, of which it constitutes the rewriting. This case study appears interesting not only for the antiquity and pervasiveness of the literary topos of the moon falling to the earth but also for the ‘palimpsestic’ or even ‘palincestuous’ nature of Consolo’s writing itself. In these pages, therefore, an attempt will be done to analyse Lunaria from three specific aspects: as a mise en abyme of rewritings, as an almost-theatrical work and, finally, as a cunto (tale) of melancholy. These aspects appear variously connected to an idea of a dialogic, if not dialectical, relationship between the source and the target text.
