description The expression nova tradition is used by Bernard of Clairvaux in his biography of saint Malachi (§ 42) to praise Malachi’s work as a reformer and innovator. Introduced at Mont Saint-Michel at the beginning of the twelfth century within a liturgical tradition partly inherited from William of Volpiano, this expression is appropriate to designate the status of the solemn feast of the Conception of the Virgin. In addition to the liturgical studies carried out during the Millénaire monastique du Mont Saint-Michel, the author reveals a relationship between the addition of the mass of 8 December to the Sacramentary of the Mont [Rouen, Bibl. patrim. François Villon, ms Suppl. 116] and the Missal of the New Minster at Winchester [Le Havre, Bibl. mun., ms 330 (A 32)] that once belonged to the monastic library of Saint-Wandrille and probably served as a bridge between England and Normandy by introducing this particular feast. During the following centuries, an increasing fidelity to this feast can be observed in the calendars of Mont Saint-Michel, for example, through the choice of a ritual proper to the feast for the mass and service and through the degree of the feast itself. However, the important reform of the thirteenth century, which also affected the liturgy, changed the feast’s theological significance to some degree. This double movement, which was based on stability and the creation of a tradition specific to the abbey that nevertheless remained open to external influences made the scriptorium of Mont Saint-Michel not an artefact, but a paradigm in the development of the Fête aux Normands. Comparison with the liturgical traditions of Fécamp and Jumièges permits a better understanding of what was at stake at Mont Saint-Michel during this innovation traditionnée. At the same time, it allows us to us see the existence of an active liturgical reform of the thirteenth century to which the scriptoria of both Mont Saint-Michel and Fécamp were both subjugated.
