| Summary: | Although the tourism sector makes a major contribution to Gross Domestic Product growth and regional employment, its positive impact on economic development has not been without costs, especially in environmental terms. The circular economy is seen as a management framework capable of reversing these negative externalities. The present study aims to contribute to the emerging line of research on this issue, while also examining how family ownership influences tourism companies’ adoption of more sustainable measures. To that end, a case study of the family tourism business Iberostar is presented and analysed, drawing on multiple data sources. This case study shows how family business characteristics relating to socioemotional wealth constitute an important trigger for the development and implementation of an ambitious and comprehensive circular economy programme. |
