| description | Periodontitis is a chronic, progressive, destructive disease that can cause tooth loss. There are some limitations in controlling plaques through mechanical removal and drug therapy using traditional treatments. In recent years, attention has been paid to the development of periodontitis vaccines to prevent and treat the destruction caused by periodontal pathogens by activating the body's immune system. Presently, in vaccine design, the targets are mainly key pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and their virulence factors. Various adjuvants can be added to enhance the immune response. Additionally, in combination with a nanomaterial delivery system, a vaccine can be delivered to the target site. Although progress has been made in periodontitis vaccines, there is still a gap in the clinical trial stage, and their clinical efficacy and safety need to be further verified. In conclusion, the development of periodontitis vaccines is a promising and challenging field. Future research is warranted to address questions regarding safety, efficacy, and how best to activate and modulate the immune response of the host. With further research, periodontitis vaccines are expected to become powerful tools for the prevention and treatment of this widespread chronic disease. |
