| Summary: | This paper examines children's material culture from the perspective of fictional developments. The contemporary profusion of objects specifically intended for children is indeed accompanied by a rise in imaginary universes and fictional characters, that transform the relationship to these products and extend their commercial and media scope. Large transmedia collections join primary and secondary functions, and material and symbolic dimensions, giving birth to objects whose fictional charge is never zero. The toy, in this respect, plays a key role in this process: it is no longer a simple by-product, but also a narrative vector, a key figure staged in imaginary worlds... which then obtain materiality. In light of this ambivalence, between fictional anchoring and material proliferation, we can understand how these playful universes are commodified and inevitably appear in children's rooms. |
