Description
Summary:Eco-fronts and their related conflicts are not a unique phenomenon of rich wilderness areas. In this article we intend to address the issue of the emergence of ecological frontiers in farmlands located within the major conurbations. Two cases will be explored in Mexico City : Xochimilco Lake and the Chalco Valley farmlands. The thesis we defend is that the emergence of ecological frontiers in areas of significant urban pressure are the visible expression of the complex processes that rural areas live today. In Mexico, these processes are characterized by the transformation of the modes of land tenure, the new dynamic of farmland circulation, the re-organization of the production and decentralization policies. In the past two decades a part of the Mexican countryside is no longer being conceived as a means of production but has become a natural area and rural landscape, an asset that can be consumed through recreation.
