Description
Summary:The functioning of piano competitions is explored in this paper as the operation of an institution that produces power and achieves effects of subjectivation within a separate discursive field. The methodological path to analyzing this type of phenomenon leads through an overview of the emergence and development of music competitions, as well as through the articulation of the critique of the French poststructuralist Michel Foucault, in which the concepts of "power", "truth" and "subject" occupy a central place. Special attention is focused on the International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. The challenges faced by this and other piano competitions are interpreted in light of the tension between norming, necessary for the institutionalized production of power and authority (the assumption of "speaking the truth"), and the individual actions of individuals - competitors or jury members - whose practices appear in their duality as both obedience or resistance to that power.
