| description | This is a descriptive research with qualitative approach accomplished in Maringá-PR-Brazil, with three families of cancer patients with the objective of understanding the meaning of living with a relative bearer of gastrointestinal cancer with stoma. Data was collected in October 2007, through semi-structured interview. The results show that when the family members acknowledge the cancer diagnosis they experience a series of feelings, thoughts and attitudes that go from hope to fear of death. In the course of time, as the disease takes its course, new organizations and arrangements in the family atmosphere are implemented, in order to prioritize the care to the patient and his/her existential condition. At this moment, a family provides psychological support to lessen the suffering with the inconvenience imposed by the stoma and its use on the disposal of excrements.
