description Children of African subsaharan immigrants have a particular place in the French society. Even though most of them are French, their itinerary belongs to the migratory history of their parents and they are assigned to the same minorised ethnic group. At school, the ethnic origin of these young people is also perceive as being an issue. So, the « culture of origin » of this population seems to be too far from the school culture and is seen as being the source of descendants of immigrants’s difficulties at school. Nevertheless, our research on the schooling of French children of African subsaharan origin, allows us to argue that, far from being the reason of the academic failure of this population, this « culture of origin » enables the academic success of the children of immigrants. Indeed, it represents a social ethnic capital, a set of values and standards transposable in the education of children and promoting their academic success.
