description Pelvic exenteration is a radical surgery for the treatment of primary and recurrent pelvic malignancies and radiation-induced rectal injury, involving the resection of multiple pelvic organs. This procedure is highly invasive and associated with a high incidence of complications. The removal of pelvic organs during surgery leaves an empty pelvic cavity, which can lead to pelvic abscess, perineal incision dehiscence, intestinal obstruction, and intestinal fistula, collectively known as empty pelvic syndrome. To prevent this syndrome, our team has adopted the “sandwich” technique, which involves placing a basal membrane bioscaffold on the abdominal side, another on the anal side, and a greater omental flap between the two scaffolds to reconstruct the pelvic floor. For empty pelvic syndrome involving pelvic infection and perineal incision dehiscence, our team effectively manage the pelvic wound using negative pressure wound therapy.
