Summary: | At the beginning of the XXth century, the Indigenist movement and socialist ideology spread out all over Peru. The young writers read Marx, Lenin and Engels’books with a lot of interest, in order to cope with the Indian issue in Peru and South America. Marxism is considered as a valid model to explain the world. This ideology inspires one of the most charismatic intellectuals of this time : Carlos Mariátegui. Siete ensayos de interpretación de la realidad peruana, his most important work has to be replaced in this context. In this book, Mariátegui pleads for an « integral » Peru, a national model based on the unity of all races. But there are some contradictions in this book, which break the idea of integration: social and racial problems which are not consistent with the national cohesion that Mariátegui claims, and which point out some misunderstanding in his analysis of reality. |
