| description | Background: The anticonvulsant effect of Aqueous Extract of Andrographis paniculata leaves (AEAP) and its synergistic action with Sodium valproate were evaluated in this research. Methods: Anticonvulsant activity of AEAP 500 mg/kg b.w. was evaluated in Wistar albino rats using the Maximal Electroshock Seizure (MES) model and the Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) seizure model. Results: The Extract demonstrated significant anticonvulsant activity in both MES and PTZ seizure models. In the MES model, the anticonvulsant action of plant extract was comparable to that of the standard drug Sodium valproate 300 mg/kg in reducing the duration of Tonic hind limb extension (THLE). AEAP exhibited a synergistic effect with sodium valproate in both MES and PTZ seizure models, resulting in 100% protection. Conclusion: AEAP exhibits anticonvulsant action. Additional research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms through which Andrographis paniculata mediates its anticonvulsant activity. |
