description Inspired by ethnographic interviews with adult men from West Africa in the summer of 2019 who initially sought asylum in the United States, this essay has two aims. The first is to use the concept of diaspora to emphasize the “autonomous” and “challenging” character of the choices that undocumented migrants make in contexts where governments try their best to prevent and discourage their movement. The second objective is to describe the conditions of the journey, on the one hand, its obstacles and dangers, and on the other, its passages and vectors. The text consists of three sections plus conclusions. The first part explains the methodology used and summarizes the circumstances of departure in each case. The second describes the arrival in South America and the northbound transit. The third outlines some of the situations that African migrants go through in Mexico.
