| Summary: | Aim/objectives
To identify incidence of benign and malignant eyelid tumors after histopathological analysis of all excised lesions in a tertiary care center in Egypt, we conducted this prospective cross-sectional study to lay on the patterns of the disease in Egypt and compare to studies from other global regions.
Method
100 histopathologically confirmed eyelid masses were included in this study and were classified according to the world health organization (WHO) classification of skin tumors in the period between January 2023 and January 2024.
Results
Benign eyelid tumors accounted for 96% of cases where squamous cell papilloma was the most prevalent among all benign lesions (32.3%) followed by nevi (16.7%). Malignant lesions account for 4% of cases with basal cell carcinoma being the most prevalent among all malignant eyelid lesions (50%). Lid tumors of epidermal cell origin were the most common irrespective of the invasive nature and were most likely to present as a papillomatous pigmented eyelid lesion (P<0.001). Tumors of adnexal cell origin were most likely to present as a nonpigmented cystic lesion (P<0.001).
Conclusion
Benign eyelid lesions showed similar incidence to other studies from the middle east region, Turkey, KSA and Iran and dissimilar results compared to other studies from Asia, Europe and Americas. |
