New data on the distribution of the water runoff in the Northeast of Russia and the water flow into the Arctic seas

Significant changes in the amount and regime of river fl ow require updating of their main characteristics. description Significant changes in the amount and regime of river fl ow require updating of their main characteristics. However, large areas of the country are not covered by a network of hydrometric observations. Moreover, most of the hydrological gauges on the rivers were closed in the 1990s – early 2000s. One of these little-studied and vast regions is the North-East of Russia. Little is known about the current values of the runoff of rivers in the region, its distribution over the territory, the infl ow of river waters into the Arctic seas and its long-term variability, although various materials indicate that the fl ow here has increased since the late 1980s – mid-1990s. To answer these and other questions, not only long-term series of water discharges are needed, but also new tools for calculating the runoff of those rivers that are not covered by the monitoring network.
