Description
Summary:This study examined the effects of leisure activities and emotional solidarity on students' intention to use a library, by considering the moderating effects of social identity and gender. This study provides insights for libraries to improve their spaces and services to attract and assist all students effectively. A quantitative survey was conducted with 838 students in Ghana to measure their engagement in leisure activities, emotional connectedness in the library, social resources, gender, and inclination to use the library for academic purposes. The results showed that engagement in recreational activities, emotional connectedness, and social resources positively influenced students' intention to use the library. However, the relationship between leisure activities and library utilisation was weaker for students with more social capital, suggesting the need for customised leisure activities that cater to social needs. Males showed greater intentions to use the library than did females; however, this gender disparity decreased for females with strong emotional attachments to the library, highlighting the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for female students. These findings suggest that libraries can increase student utilisation by integrating recreational activities, promoting emotional unity, and addressing social and gender needs. Creating a welcoming and interactive atmosphere that encourages social engagement, a sense of belonging, and assistance can enhance the academic achievement of all students. Further research on causal relationships and specific strategies for implementing these findings can provide valuable insights into library establishment and management.
