description Based on portraits of secondary school teachers who vote leftwing, this article brings together perspectives from political sociology and the sociology of work to examine the role of interactions relating to elections within professional sociabilities. It analyses how the social and political composition of groups of teachers contributed to restricting political exchanges between colleagues in the context of the 2022 presidential and parliamentary campaigns. While shedding light on the different forms of political engagement among left-leaning teachers, it highlights a multiplicity of strategies employed to avoid political discussions in the workplace, including: an avoidance of distinction for teachers who consider themselves as having high political literacy, and an avoidance based on self-preservation in professional contexts that foster feelings of incompetence and illegitimacy when it comes to “talking politics”.
