description
Foundation: the increase in morbidity due to chronic periodontitis is of special importance, since it affects the life quality of those who suffer from it. For this reason, it is important to carry out studies that contribute to the characterization of this entity behavior.
Objective: to characterize chronic periodontitis from a clinical and epidemiological point of view.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between January 2021 and January 2023. The universe 3,807 individuals over 19 years of age, belonging to four clinics in the Armando García Aspuru Health area, treated at the Mártires del Moncada Provincial Teaching Stomatology Clinic, in Santiago de Cuba. The sample (n=1,068) was selected through intentional probabilistic sampling. The specified variables were: age, sex, prevalence and risk factors initiating chronic periodontitis. The information was taken from the individual medical history, entered into a data form prepared for each patient, and presented in tables through descriptive statistics of absolute and relative frequencies. The Chi-square statistical test was used with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: A prevalence of chronic periodontitis of 43.3% was observed, mainly in the 35-59 age group (63.6%) and in the female sex (57.8%). Among the initiating risk factors, smoking was the most frequent (27.3%).
Conclusions: a high prevalence of chronic periodontitis was obtained, significantly associated with age and initiating risk factors, which were represented progressively according to the stages of the disease.
