| Summary: | Sociologists who tested their physical limits by working in factories (Donald Roy, Robert Linhart, Michaël Burawoy) have long talked about the physicality of work. Yet the sociology of work has generally been estranged from this topic. Although physicality has featured in empirical studies, analysis of the linkages between employment structures and work processes, on one hand, and ways of analysing and experiencing workers’ physicality, on the other, is still sketchy. The paper aims to overcome this lacuna by asking new questions about people’s physical engagement at work and the different ways in which their bodies respond. Contributions reveal fundamental dynamics relating to all aspects of the sociology of work. These not only include frontline workers’ physical movements but also a novel focus applying new spatio-temporal disciplines and including physicality and self-control techniques; socio-educational work provisions’ impact on stakeholders’ experiences and use of their bodies; and the plurality of modes involved in the capitalist appropriation of people’s bodies. |
