Description
Summary:HHV-8 (Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpesvirus) is considered as the etiological agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), primary effusion lymphoma, multicentric Castleman’s disease (MCD), POEMS-syndrome, and HHV-8 inflammatory cytokine syndrome (HHV-8-KICS). Eye diseasesmay be the initial or the only manifestations of KS and MCD or be combined with systemic pathology. We discuss the role of HHV-8 in the pathogenesis of lymphomas of the orbit, the eye, and the conjunctiva. In the pathogenesis of KS and MCD, HHV-8 inflammatory cytokine syndrome plays an important role due to the unique ability of HHV-8 to produce viral cytokine IL-6, homologous to human proinflammatory IL-6 // Russian Ophthalmological Journal, 2016; 4: 91-6. doi: 10.21516/2072-0076-2016-9-4-91-96.
