description With the increased use of mechanised ultrasonic inspections, many ultrasonic applications now employ refracting wedges equipped with wear pins. The purpose of wear pins is often ignored as technicians adjust them proud of the refracting wedge, with the explanation that it is “to improve couplant flow”. Contrary to the opinion that a small gap improves the inspection, lab observations and CIVA simulations have been carried out to demonstrate that there is a deleterious effect on signal quality when coupling gap is used. This paper provides examples of the effect on signal amplitude that results with water-gap adjustment. Simulations of gap are made for wear-pin adjustment and for small gaps that can occur when a wedge contoured for curvature on a cylinder of one diameter is used on a cylinder that is slightly larger in diameter.
