description
Foundation: hemorrhoidal disease is a frequent reason for medical consultation, therefore its study is of vital importance for the coloproctologist.
Objective: to characterize hemorrhoidal disease in patients treated in the Coloproctology service.
Methods: a retrospective descriptive case series study was carried out on 328 patients operated on for hemorrhoidal disease at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima hospital, over a period of three years (2020-2022). The clinical histories and data collection forms applied in the Coloproctology consultation were reviewed. The studied variables were: age, sex, history of the disease, comorbidities, type of hemorrhoids, classification according to grade, reason for consultation, surgical technique used and postoperative complications.
Results: females predominated (60.1%), patients with smoking habits (33.6%) and arterial hypertension (39.9%), as well as the age group 61-70 years (33.2%). The majority came to the consultation due to a mucosal prolapse. Mixed hemorrhoids were the most frequent, in addition to grade IV (67.1%). The most frequently used surgical technique was submucosal hemorrhoidectomy. 69.3% had a favorable evolution in the postoperative period, and bleeding was the most observed complication (14.7%).
Conclusions: due to the discomfort it causes, hemorrhoidal disease is a frequent reason for consultation. Its timely diagnosis and surgical treatment contribute to the significant impact on the patients’ quality of life.
