Description
Summary:This essay aims to reconstruct the events related to the last years of life and the alleged martyrdom of three Spanish Trinitarian friars (Juan de Águila, Bernardo Monroy, Juan de Palacios), who died in slavery in Algiers and tries to explain the possible reasons for the failure of their canonisation. The background of the story is the redemption of captives held in 1609 in Algiers, where the friars were imprisoned and died between 1613 and 1622, suddenly being considered as martyrs. But martyrdom does not always lead to sanctity: on the basis of unpublished sources, conserved in Spanish and Vatican archives, this essay intends to shed light on the reasons that resulted in the failure of their canonisation process.
