Summary: | This article deals with sentence-initial constituents in a German text (Zorn und Zeit, by the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, 2006) and its French translation by Olivier Mannoni (Colère et temps, 2009). Those constituents are assessed relative to the four main criteria that usually account for word order in sentences (Korzen & Nølke, 1996): indicating the sentence type, marking syntactic functions, making the message optimal, and information structure. On the basis of these criteria, the present paper seeks to determine under what conditions, in the corpus at hand, a sentence-initial constituent is translated or should be translated within a sentence; in so doing, the study also discusses the relevance and limits of these criteria. |
