description Political journalism used to be the “aristocratic” branch of the national daily press in France and, with few exceptions, an exclusively male dominated domain. Since the 1990s, the number of women journalists in the political pages of French daily newspapers has increased. However, this feminization has neither reached the same depth nor espoused the same forms in a cross section of comparable newspapers. From a case study of Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro and L’Humanité, we intend first to stress the differentiated processes of (de)-feminization of political journalism and, secondly, to deconstruct the mechanisms of this (de)-feminization.
