| Summary: | This work gives to discover Bas-Verdon, of the outlet of the Grandes Gorges on the lake of Sainte-Croix up to the confluence with Durance river. This sector, constituted essentially by limestones, offers remarkable natural sites (Saint-Maurin, ravine of Entreroches near Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Moyennes and Basses Gorges…), caves of a big prehistoric value (Balm-Bonne, Saint-Maxime's cave…, the contributions of which are emphasized in the museum of the Verdon Gorge, in Quinson), old villages (Moustiers, Bauduen, Quinson, Gréoux-les-Bains…). But it has been profoundly transformed by the construction of three hydroelectric dams (Sainte-Croix ‒ the main work, the lake of which flooded the village of Les Salles ‒, Quinson and Gréoux), among which that of Gréoux also ensures the supply in water of wide parts of Bouches-du-Rhône and Var (the lake of Esparron feeding the Channel of Provence).By guiding us of site in site, of village in village, Jean NICOD expresses his passions for a discipline, geomorphology, which he exercised with so much talent, and for a region which he has for a long time and minutely studied and where he spread his roots, in Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier. |
