| Summary: | Background: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs for Indonesian nurses often fail to align with their career paths, facing obstacles such as unequal access, financial limitations, and scheduling conflicts. The electronic CPD (e-CPD) model presents a viable solution by offering accessible and cost-effective learning opportunities. This study aimed to identify nurses' needs and develop, implement, and evaluate an e-CPD model designed to enhance professional competencies in Indonesia. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate nurses’ needs and to develop, implement, and evaluate e-CPD model to enhance professional competencies in Indonesia. Methods: This exploratory action research study was conducted in Indonesia from 2022 to 2023 and consisted of two phases: exploration and action. A purposive sampling approach was employed to recruit 38 participants, including clinical nurses, hospital management personnel, and representatives from professional nursing associations. Data collection involved three Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) aimed at identifying barriers to CPD and informing the development of the e-CPD platform. The platform was designed based on these insights and included interactive modules covering topics such as patient safety, clinical decision-making, evidence-based practice, and leadership. A pilot test of the e-CPD platform was conducted with Level I clinical nurses, assessing usability through the System Usability Scale (SUS) and evaluating competency improvements using pre- and post-test scores analyzed with paired t-tests in SPSS.Results: Quantitative analysis revealed a significant 19.3% increase in post-test scores (P < 0.001), indicating significant improvements in competency. Usability testing using the SUS yielded an excellent average score of 83.5. Qualitative findings indicated that nurses appreciated the platform's self-paced learning format, accessibility, and relevance to clinical practice. However, challenges such as limited peer interaction and internet connectivity issues in rural areas were identified. Insights from the FGDs played a crucial role in shaping the platform, ensuring that the modules addressed the real-world needs of CPD.Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the e-CPD model effectively addresses major barriers to CPD participation among nurses in Indonesia, providing a scalable and adaptable approach to enhancing their competencies. Future research should focus on long-term knowledge retention, professional development outcomes, and broader implementation across various healthcare settings. |
