Summary:Abstract The cardiovascular system, a complex network vital for maintaining homeostasis, faces disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, impacting overall health. Heparin, a widely used anticoagulant, plays a crucial role in cardiovascular function by exerting multifaceted effects. This review explores heparin’s impact on the cardiovascular system, emphasizing its anticoagulant properties, modulation of endothelial function, anti-inflammatory effects, platelet inhibition, and influence on vascular remodeling. Heparin enhances antithrombin III activity, inhibiting key clotting factors and preventing thrombus formation. It preserves endothelial function by maintaining nitric oxide availability and protecting against oxidative stress. Heparin exhibits anti-inflammatory actions by suppressing cytokine production, inhibiting neutrophil activation, and mitigating leukocyte adhesion. Additionally, it interferes with vascular remodeling processes, inhibiting excessive extracellular matrix production and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. By directly inhibiting platelet function, heparin prevents aggregation and thrombus initiation. Understanding these mechanisms enhances our comprehension of heparin’s therapeutic utility in diverse cardiovascular conditions, emphasizing the importance of careful monitoring due to potential bleeding complications.
